Even Jurgen Klopp‘s most successful Liverpool teams didn’t have the range of attacking options his Class of ’23 does.
Forwards Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota were both on the scoresheet in Wednesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win against Leicester and neither of them is likely to dislodge the current favoured front three of Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz at the weekend.
And if you thought Liverpool’s Fab Five was quite enough, the dazzling performance of 17-year-old Ben Doak on the right suggested he’ll be at the top for years to come.
‘So exciting, watching him play makes me smile,’ purred Klopp.
Liverpool’s success in winning the Champions League and Premier League in 2019 and 2020, and the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 was based around Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane being fit and available every week.

Jurgen Klopp currently has an attack to rival his most successful teams – and their main rivals

They were consistently sensational but the cupboard was relatively bare outside them, save a brief purple patch from Divock Origi.
That trio was a freak – the every-condensed fixture list demands top clubs have competition in attack, and nobody in the Premier League can currently rival Liverpool in that area.
Salah is still world-class, Nunez a confirmed Kop favourite even before his recent hot form and Diaz combines hard work and talent.
Gakpo was man-of-the-match against Leicester, he scored the crucial equaliser, hit the bar and when Nunez arrived midway through the second half, he stayed on the pitch, putting in a shift deeper on the pitch.
Jota is also fantastic in the air and his impudent flicked finish against Leicester showed he’s got skills too. His goal record for Liverpool is impressive, 44 in 120 appearances, of which 77 have been starts.
No wonder Klopp’s famous beam is back after a summer of brain drain to the Saudi League where Fabinho, Firmino and captain Jordan Henderson now play.
‘Super signs,’ he says about the number of different goal threats in his team. ‘We scored top goals against Leicester and the moves for the ‘goals’ we didn’t score were beautiful as well.

I don’t know how we missed some of the chances, don’t have a clue.’
Klopp’s stellar team relied on the front three to score because midfielders and defenders rarely did.
That’s changing now. Dominik Szoboszlai’s rocket shot for Liverpool’s second was Steven Gerrard and Sir Bobby Charlton all rolled into one.
Trent Alexander-Arnold will chip in now he switches from right-back to midfield during games.
It’s no wonder Liverpool have won five in a row scoring at least three – the first time since Kenny Dalglish’s team did it in the 1980s. They are unbeaten in 19 dating back to April 1.
‘Absolutely top, the boys enjoyed playing it.’ said the Liverpool manager after watching his side have 29 shots.

17-year-old Ben Doak has also emerged as another talented Liverpool prospect
He didn’t even have to name Salah in the squad. How many managers have that luxury knowing the goals will come from elsewhere.
Their first six Premier League matches have produced five wins and a draw, with 15 goals scored. Another six have been registered in their opening rounds of the Europa League and Carabao Cup.
No other team at this stage has six players who have already scored at least a couple of goals in this very early part of the season. Liverpool do – Salah, Nunez, Diaz, Gakpo, Jota and Szoboszlai.
Spurs won’t know where the danger is coming from on Saturday.
