The agents of veteran Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel will meet with representatives from Serie A side Udinese on Wednesday in an attempt to settle an agreement for the 36-year-old, who is currently available on a free transfer.

Udinese are on the lookout for new additions after losing Lorenzo Lucca to Napoli, Jaka Bijol to Leeds United, and soon Florian Thauvin to Lens as well.

Football Italia understands that Kosta Runjaic’s side are particularly keen on picking up 36-year-old Witsel on a free transfer after the end of his three-year spell in Spain with Atletico Madrid.

The 132-capped Belgium international will be the subject of a meeting between agents and Udinese on Wednesday, as the parties look to seal an agreement for a free transfer.

It is understood that Udinese have offered a one-year contract with the potential option for an additional 12 months.

Witsel played a key role under Diego Simeone during his first two seasons in the Spanish capital, registering 33 LaLiga appearances in 2022-23 and then 35 in 2023-24, but was limited to just 14 league outings last term following the arrival of England international Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.
