Maximilian Arnold and VfL Wolfsburg are expected to begin contract talks this week, according to Wolfsburger Allgemeine and Aller-Zeitung.
The 31-year-old Wolfsburg captain is out of contract at the end of the season, but looks increasingly likely to stay.
Wolfsburg’s management, led by sporting managing director Peter Christiansen, had previously hesitated, wanting new coach Paul Simonis to assess the squad before making a decision.
Having scored once and provided two assists in three league games so far this season, Arnold now appears to have convinced the Dutch coach that he deserves a new deal.
The experienced central midfielder has spent his entire professional career at the club.
