Woltemade admits Stuttgart gave result away too easily

Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade pulled no punches as he reacted to Stuttgart’s 2-1 loss against Wolfsburg.

“We gave the lead away far too easily,” said Woltemade, who opened the scoring spectacularly for die Schwaben in the 72nd minute.

Goals from ex-Stuttgart man Tiago Tomas and Mohamed Amoura saw Wolfsburg overturn this, however, and pick up a 2-1 win on the road.

Woltemade added: “The goal felt great. As a team, we’d battled so hard to take the lead, but ultimately, we’ve been left empty-handed. It’s really frustrating.”

“We played so well in Dortmund but didn’t manage to do the same today after going 1-0 ahead. That’s all part of our process of development, but we could have definitely avoided defeat today.”

The 23-year-old netted his 7th Bundesliga goal of the campaign this afternoon after dancing round the Wolfsburg defence fantastically.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß and defender Jeff Chabot also gave their reactions:

Hoeneß: “We’re not happy at all with the result. We deserved to take the lead, and after going 1-0 up, there’s no way we should have lost this game. It’s hugely frustrating. We should have defended much better for both of the goals. For all the maturity we showed in our performance in Dortmund last week, we were just as immature in the last 18 minutes today. We need to learn from what happened in the period after we scored and draw the right conclusions. The defeat hurts because it was avoidable.”

Chabot: “It’s incredibly frustrating that we threw the game away. We were by far the better team. Wolfsburg scored the equaliser from their first dangerous shot of the game. That hurts. I don’t want to say too much about the penalty. If it had been the other way around, we would probably have asked for it too.”
