Croatian international Ana Maria Markovic, who has been dubbed the ‘world’s most beautiful footballer’ has had her contract cancelled at a club days after admitting ‘sometimes I just hate football’.
Markovic has played for Swiss teams FC Zurich and Grasshoppers during her career to date, but joined Portuguese side SC Braga last summer.
The 25-year-old, who has won 20 caps for the Croatian national team, has made just four appearances for team this season.
Last month she filmed a TikTok which showed her saying goodbye to her boyfriend and fellow footballer Tomas Ribeiro.
Ribeiro, who previously played for Grasshoppers, had been a defender for Portuguese top flight outfit Vitoria Guimaraes.
Markovic’s video followed Ribeiro completing a move to Farnese on the other side of the country, whereas Braga and Guimaraes are just 25 kilometres apart.

Markovic has been dubbed by some fans as being the ‘world’s most beautiful footballer’
‘Sometimes I just hate football,’ Markovic wrote, while filming herself crying in the TikTok video.
‘Good luck bubi, you will do amazing and I can’t wait to see your games,’ she added following Ribeiro’s move.
Markovic now appears to be on the move, with the Croatian having seen her Braga contract cancelled.
‘SC Braga informs that the Club and Ana Maria Marković have terminated, by mutual agreement, the contract that united the two parties,’ a club statement read.
‘The Croatian international played four games for the Gverreiras do Minho in her debut season in Portuguese football.
‘SC Braga thanks you for all the dedication, commitment and professionalism with which you have always represented the Club and wishes you all the best in your professional and personal future.’
Markovic has since followed up with a message thanking her team-mates and fans for their support, while teasing a future move.
‘Sometimes things don’t go as planned. After just half a season, I decided to leave SC Braga. It was a short but intense journey with ups and downs, but one in which I was able to grow and develop a lot as a footballer,’ she wrote on Instagram.

‘The best part? Definitely my teammates! Thank you for your support, team spirit, and all the great moments on and off the pitch – you are amazing!
‘A big thank you to the club for their professionalism throughout my time here and to the fans, for the support. The journey continues and I’m excited for what’s next!’
Markovic appears to be poised to remain in Portugal after sharing another TikTok on Monday featuring Ribiero.
The clip was captioned ‘New chapter, new home’ and featured a Portuguese flag.
The footballer was born in Split, Croatia but moved to Switzerland when she was 12, and started playing football seriously at the age of 14.
In a 2022 interview with Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten, Markovic claimed that female players are discriminated against on social media far more than their male counterparts, and are often the butt of sexist comments and jokes.
‘What makes the difference between men and women is, for example, when I show myself in a bikini on social media or when Erling Haaland [shows himself] in his swimming trunks.

She has previously spoken out in an interview against being labelled as ‘sexy’ by football fans

Markovic, who grew up in Switzerland, has previously played for FC Zurich and Grasshoppers
‘Erling almost certainly doesn’t get the same sexist comments.
‘We women are good at standing up for each other, but what I wish for is that men start standing up for us too.
‘Men always talk about ”men of honour”, but it would be really honourable if they stood behind us in such situations.’
Markovic added that her goal is to advocate equality and ‘be a role model for young footballers’ – previously hitting out at sleazy social media comments and being labelled as ‘sexy’.
