Xabi Alonso keen to maintain unbeaten run against Bayern

Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League cracker against Bayern Munich, Xabi Alonso was asked about the fact that he hasn’t lost to the Bavarians since joining Die Werkself.

Remarkably, Xabi Alonso hasn’t lost a single game against Bayern Munich since taking over as Bayer Leverkusen coach in October 2022.

Of the six meetings he has had with the Bavarians as Leverkusen coach, his side have won three and drawn the other three.

Now Alonso will face the team he once represented as a player in the Champions League last 16, with the first leg taking place at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old will be keen to continue his impressive run of form against the Bavarians, but insisted there is no secret formula at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“There is no secret,” Xabi Alonso told reporters. 

“The last games against Bayern don’t mean anything to us for tomorrow, they don’t bring us anything. We only look at the next game and we want to prepare as best as possible.

“We’re prepared for a tough battle, we want to be competitive and get a result.”
