RB Leipzig issued a statement Thursday confirming a serious ligament injury for Dutch attacking phenom Xavi Simons.

Forced off in last night’s loss to Liverpool, RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons may be done for the rest of the calendar year due to a serious ligament injury. The 21-year-old’s German club released a statement Thursday afternoon confirming a “serious injury” that will sideline the Dutchman for “several weeks”.

Leipzig took care to note that it had not yet been decided if Simons should undergo surgery. In the likely event that the syndesmosis is affected, the youngster could suffer the same fate as left-back David Raum, who is not expected back until the new calendar year.

Along with Raum, Xaver Schlager, and Assan Ouedraogo, Xavi is the fourth RB player to suffer a major injury setback this year. Though the youngster has been somewhat slow to take off this season, potential replacements Christoph Baumgartner and Eljif Elmas haven’t been able to impress either.
