Xavi Simons‘ proposed move to Chelsea is still not imminent, as the Dutchman started in RB Leipzig‘s season opener in the DFB-Pokal.
The Blues have been locked in talks with the Bundesliga side regarding a deal for the 22-year-old for weeks. However, these discussions still remain at a fairly early stage as Chelsea are currently not in a position to finalise this transfer.
The Stamford Bridge club need to make sales before they can proceed with the signing of Simons, and a fee with Leipzig has yet to be agreed. Personal terms with the Netherlands international, on the other hand, have already been agreed.
Simons is keen on the move to Chelsea, but unwanted stars like Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson will have to be sold first. The Blues have even offered players like Nkunku, Tyrique George and Carney Chukwuemeka to Leipzig in a bid to get a better deal, but to no avail.
Despite this saga having dragged on for several weeks already, a solution still does not appear to be imminent. This has now essentially been confirmed by RB Leipzig.
Simons stars for Leipzig
Unlike Benjamin Sesko, who was removed from Leipzig’s team training when his transfer to Man Utd edged closer, Simons has continued to train with Ole Werner’s side, only briefly spending time alone due to some physical discomfort.
On Saturday, Leipzig travelled to fourth-tier Sandhausen for their season opener in the DFB-Pokal in what would quickly turn into a crazy game, with both teams scoring twice within the first 23 minutes.
Surprisingly, Simons was among the starters, which confirmed that his move to Chelsea is still not close. Leipzig would not have used the Dutchman and risked him getting injured if he were on the verge of leaving.
Simons played well in the game, showing no signs of his supposed frustration over the delay of his transfer. However, both he and Chelsea fans will evidently have to show a bit more patience as this deal is still far from guaranteed to happen.
