One way or another, FSV Mainz 05 will have to face SC Freiburg this weekend with a keeper possessing little-to-no Bundesliga experience in net. FSV interim trainer Jan Siewert revealed at his Thursday presser that normal #1 Robin Zentner will be unavailable due to a finger injury. Zentner has played every minute of every match for the Rheinhessen this season in both league and cup and is widely considered to be the primary reason why Mainz’s poor start to the campaign hasn’t been significantly worse.

Siewert’s two options to stand in goal are 32-year-old journeyman Daniel Batz, who once made a Bundesliga appearance for SC Freiburg in 2012, and 22-year-old Lasse Rieß. The youngster has never made a top-flight appearance, but served as Zentner’s presumed back-up on most of Mainz’s match-day bench squads this season. Siewert played the matter of who would start on Sunday very close to the vest, merely commenting that “both of them are fit for the Bundesliga.”
