Since joining Borussia Dortmund from Sunderland for around €30 million in the summer, Jobe Bellingham has made just two starts in all competitions.

Most recently, the England U21 international played just 13 minutes in Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg.

In an interview with Kicker, Dortmund coach Niko Kovac explained why the youngster hasn’t been given more minutes.

“Everyone wants to play more. Everyone wants to play every minute. But then you only have eleven players,” Kovac said.

“When you sign a contract here, it’s not only well paid, but it also means there’s a lot of competition,” he added.

Kovac went on to describe Jobe Bellingham as “a very talented player”, but noted that he still needs time to adapt.

“He’s a player with high potential, but also one who needs to grow into his role here,” Kovac said, calling the move from Sunderland a “big step”.

The coach also stressed that the 20-year-old shouldn’t be under extra pressure just because he is Jude Bellingham’s younger brother.

“You shouldn’t make the mistake of putting too much pressure on him just because of the name,” Kovac said.

“I don’t think that does him any favours.”
