AC Milan v Newcastle preview

Tuesday evening’s match in Milan will be Newcastle’s first match in the Champions League since a penalty shoot-out defeat at home to Partizan Belgrade in the third round of Champions League qualifying back in August 2003.

It’s been a long 20 years for Newcastle fans, which has two different spells in the Championship, but the Magpies are back in the big time, competing with Europe’s elite on the biggest stage of them all.

Newcastle’s fourth place finish in the Premier League last season ensured a return to the group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, with their campaign starting in Milan against least season’s semi-finalists at the San Siro on Tuesday evening.

Eddie Howe’s side prepared themselves for the match by ending their three match losing streak in the Premier League following a tough start to their domestic campaign, as Callum Wilson’s penalty guided the Magpies to a 1-0 win over Brentford.

Newcastle had lost their three previous league games to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton in what was a tricky start to the new season for the Magpies.

Saturday’s win has lifted the Tyneside club up to 11th in the table, where they now sit only three points off the top seven, with their next two league games coming against newly promoted sides currently occupying two of the bottom four positions in the league.

AC Milan, the champions of Italy in 2022, had started the new campaign perfectly with three wins out of three until they met their local rivals Inter in the Milan Derby on Saturday evening.

Stefano Pioli’s side sat joint top of the Serie A table alongside their city rivals prior to kick-off, but were hammered 5-1 by their noisy neighbours as they tasted defeat for the first time this season.

The defeat has pushed the Rossoneri down to third in the table and has affected their goal difference badly, with arch rivals Inter now leading the way on their own at the top of Serie A with the only 100% record in the division.

Tuesday’s match will be the first time AC Milan and Newcastle have ever played each other in a competitive game.

AC Milan v Newcastle betting tips

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has bagged four goals in as many games for the Rossoneri this season, with his last three goals all coming from the penalty spot.

talkSPORT BET have boosted the odds on the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker to score a penalty on Tuesday up to 5/1.

Goals have followed AC Milan wherever they go this season, whether they be for last season’s Champions League semi finalists or against them, so a lot of goals could be in store on Tuesday night.

The same bookie have also boosted the odds for Newcastle to beat AC Milan 4-2 in a goal fest at the San Siro to 75/1.
