Manchester United have been told to start negotiating the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP with an eye to capturing him in the January transfer window.
Gyokeres will cost the full value of his €100 million release clause when the transfer window opens in four weeks, yet according to A Bola, he may well fetch that sum in the summer in any case.
Sporting have made it clear that he will be available on a cut-price deal worth around €70m in the summer after the Sweden star agreed to remain at the club during 2024, when there was intense interest for him, particularly from Arsenal.
After scoring 24 goals in 21 games for Sporting this season, this interest has only grown, and A Bola believes that a bidding war could well be trigged. In this case, Gyokeres could well be sold for €100m in any case.
The Portuguese source says “it is not out of the question” that Man Utd will open talks with Sporting over signing the striker with immediate effect. The Red Devils could also trigger talks for 17-year-old winger Giovany Quenda, although he cannot move to Old Trafford until the summer, by which time he will have celebrated his 18th birthday.
A Bola stresses, meanwhile, that it does not believe there is any truth to the rumours that any Premier League club has already made contact with Sporting over Gyokeres.
FootballTransfers, meanwhile, has exclusively revealed that is it Newcastle United who are most advanced in terms of pushing to sign the 26-year-old.
Viktor Gyokeres to Man Utd: What has Ruben Amorim said?
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has said that Gyokeres will not leave Sporting until the summer.
Speaking following Sporting’s Champions League win over Manchester City, when he was still in charge of the Lisbon club, he said: “If I joke about Gyokeres leaving, I have problems.
“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going… maybe… somewhere else.”
Once announced by Man Utd, he softened his comments a little.
“Viktor is a special player and Conrad Harder will take his place at Sporting,” Amorim said last month. “I don’t know when it will happen, but I’m happy for the club.”
While Amorim naturally wants to be respectful towards his former side, he will also need a ruthless edge to succeed at Man Utd – and that may mean a January raid for Gyokeres.
