Antony produces SHOCKING miss from just two yards out – as £82m flop wastes golden opportunity to equalise for Man United against Southampton

Manchester United winger Antony produced a contender for miss of the season in his side’s Premier League clash with Southampton at Old Trafford.

With the Red Devils 1-0 down following a first-half own goal from Manuel Ugarte, United broke forward and Alejandro Garnacho struck the ball across goal.

Antony arrived at the back post with the goal at his mercy, but the ball hit his shin and bobbled into the hands of Aaron Ramsdale.

The £82m forward lay on the floor in the six-yard box looking up at the sky after wasting a golden opportunity to equalise for his team.

Meanwhile, TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher was left in disbelief at what he had just seen.

‘I cannot believe he’s missed it,’ Fletcher exclaimed as Ramsdale gratefully clutched the ball to his chest.

Co-commentator Ally McCoist was equally perplexed, and questioned why Antony even went to ground rather than staying on his feet to tap the ball home.

‘Why is he going to ground, Fletch?’ McCoist asked. ‘The ball is perfect. Just knock the ball in the net. 

‘That’s absolutely unbelievable. That’s a sitter, mate, that is. Shocking finish but a good move.’

Antony had been brought on at half time to replace Kobbie Mainoo after a difficult first half for the hosts.

Andre Onana had been forced to make a string of sharp saves, but could not keep out a Southampton corner that deflected off Ugarte and into the net.

Antony’s introduction was supposed to spark United into life, but Ruben Amorim could only watch on in horror as the Brazilian passed up one of the easiest chances he will get all season.
