Southampton forward Ben Brereton Diaz has set a new Premier League record of making the most appearances in the competition without being on the winning side, after his side lost 3-0 at home to Manchester United.

The Chile international has now not featured in the winning side of a Premier League game for 18 matches, having overtaken the unenviable record set by Marvin Sordell.

Sordell set the record between 2012 and 2015 for Burnley and Bolton Wanderers, with 17 games without a win. That included 14 losses and four draws.

United’s dominate win over the Saints consigned Brereton Diaz to the annals of Premier League history, as his side failed to capitalise on early chances in the game, including a penalty, which Red Devils’ keeper Andre Onana saved in the 32nd minute.

It’s not the longest winless run for a player, however, with the Chilean winger still having some way to go to equal the Premier League record.

That particularly dubious record is held by Oliver Burke, who didn’t end up on the winning side in any of his first 25 Premier League appearances.

Burke finally experienced a win in his 26th appearance, an astounding four years after his debut, when Sheffield United beat Newcastle 1-0 in January 2021.

He will be filling a hole in the Saints’ front line left by Che Adams, who left for Serie A club Torino, after rejecting a new deal to stay on the Solent.

The Chilean international has been unveiled by the Saints, after signing a four-year deal with the south-coast club.

Brereton Diaz is the second signing for the Saints, who gained promotion back to the Premier League from the Championship via the play-offs, last season.

Born in Stoke, Brereton Diaz came through the youth ranks of Manchester United, Stoke City and Nottingham Forest, before signing a professional contract with Blackburn, where he spent five years.

He made 147 appearances for Rovers in that time, scoring 47 goals.

The 25-year-old swapped Blackburn for Spain last summer and went on to spend the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, where he scored six goals in 14 top-flight appearances.

He switched international allegiance to Chile after coming through England’s youth set-up and made his debut in 2021.
