Benfica star snubs Man United interest despite tempting transfer clause amid Ruben Amorim’s summer signing plans

Benfica star Alvaro Carreras has denied the possibility of returning to Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old enjoys a breakthrough season in Portugal, emerging as a strong starter for the silver medallists.

The Spanish talent made 38 appearances during this campaign, scoring three goals and adding four assists.

Carreras secured a permanent exit from the Red Devils just last summer – but enjoyed three loan spells since 2022 – after failing to record a single game for the senior squad.

However, in an interview with A Bola via Sport Witness, ahead of Wednesday’s game against Barcelona in the Champions League, the United academy product confidently opposed a return to Old Trafford.

‘The truth is that I’m overlooking it a bit,’ he said. ‘I’m concentrating on what I have to do, because every three days I have a game.

The Red Devils are believed to have a buy-back clause valued at £16.7 million 

‘There’s always interest from teams and everyone wants to grow, but I’m doing very well here (at Benfica).

‘Manchester United have an option to buy that has been signed, but I’m very happy here.’

His current deal at Benfica is believed to expire in the summer of 2029, while the Red Devils can return the 21-year-old for around £16.7million.

Carreras’ performance this season gained interest from leading European clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are in search of a new left back after Alphonso Davies penned a new five-year deal with Bayern Munich, which followed a lengthy saga between the LaLiga giants and the Canada international.

Meanwhile, Madrid academy product Fran Garcia is considered not up to the team’s standards.

Their rivals Barcelona also emerged as a party interested in Carreras’ abilities as the Catalans attempted to increase the competition in the left back position, where Alejandro Balde is currently the undisputed starter.

His former side United brought a new left back to Old Trafford in the January transfer window, Patrick Dorgu, in a deal worth £29m.

Previous reports stated that Real Madrid – where Carreras played between 2017 and 2020 – were also interested in bringing the player to Santiago Bernabeu

The 20-year-old started on three occasions yet failed to deliver a strong performance, especially after his red card against Ipswich Town in late February.

Carreras is expected to feature in Benfica’s starting lineup against Barcelona on Wednesday.

The youngster played 71 minutes and provided an assist in the teams’ previous showdown, which ended with a stunning 4-5 score on the sheets.
