Blackburn keeper Aynsley Pears guilty of horrendous blooper as he miskicks into his own net to consign Rovers to defeat in Championship relegation six-pointer with Sheffield Wednesday

Blackburn’s Aynsley Pears was guilty of one of the season’s biggest bloopers after scoring a humiliating own goal in their crunch relegation clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

Rovers had just gone behind for the second time at Ewood Park when Marvin Johnson put Wednesday 2-1 ahead in the 58th minute.

Six minutes later, Blackburn defender Dominic Hyam played an innocuous back pass from the right-back position that should have been bread and butter for Pears to deal with.

Under no pressure, he instead took a huge swipe at the ball with his right boot, only to see it bobble and skim off his shin, spin backwards and go into his net to gift Wednesday a 3-1 advantage.

Pears tried to blame Hyam for the pass and then the turf but really could only blame himself as 7,000 travelling Wednesday fans celebrated in the stand behind him.
