Borussia Dortmund scored from the penalty spot and saw it overturned in absurd circumstances after a VAR review against Borussia Monchengladbach. 

Edin Terzic‘s men were leading 2-1 at Borussia-Park as they attempted to get back to winning follow back-to-back defeats and keep pace with RB Leipzig in the race for Champions League football. 

They had the chance to gain a two-goal lead minutes after the break when they were awarded a penalty as  Jonas Omlin was deemed to have brought down Karim Adeyemi. 

Marcel Sabitzer stepped up and converted but the referee blew the whistle almost immediately for a VAR review. 

The penalty was eventually overturned as Omlin had won the ball fairly.

Dortmund went on to hold on to their 2-1 lead to remain fifth and level on points with fourth-placed Leipzig. 

The Bundesliga giants races into a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes through Sabitzer, with his second goal coming from the spot. 

Maximilian Wober halved the deficit for Monchengladbach on the 36 minute mark but it proved to be just a consolation in the end. 

Dortmund went down to 10-men after 55 minutes when Adeyemi saw red for a second bookable offence but the visitors could not take advantage. 

They will return to action on Tuesday for the Champions League quarter-final second leg tie against Atletico, which they trail 2-1.
