Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was and still is Dortmund‘s successor to Jadon Sancho, but the youngster would do well to avoid imitating his predecessor.

Jadon Sancho was once the gem of Borussia Dortmund, the shining example of what trusting youth can do for a club and, of course, the players. The former Man City academy graduate eventually headed back to Manchester, signing for Man Utd in an €85 million deal in 2021.

Since then, Sancho has endured a tragic fall from grace and his career at Old Trafford abruptly ended earlier this season when he publicly snapped back at Erik ten Hag. Exiled from the first team, Sancho will depart in January.

Like Sancho, Bynoe-Gittens traded the academy of Man City for that of Dortmund. Unlike Sancho, however, the 19-year-old’s rise to prominence has been much, much slower. His promising start to 2022/23 was derailed by a shoulder injury from which he never really recovered over the course of the season.

The early signs this term weren’t much better either, but over the past week, we have seen a very different player.

JBG a man in form

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is currently in the midst of a great run of form and is finally showing the kind of promise that convinced Dortmund to make him Sancho’s successor – and to hand him a new deal earlier in the season.

After four games as an unused substitute, the winger started against Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend and paid back the faith with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 thriller. He kept his place for the midweek Champions League fixture against AC Milan and again notched a goal and an assist.

Against the Italians, the young Englishman impressed with his overall play. His silky skills and speed made him a constant threat on the left flank and he torched Rossoneri right-back Davide Calabria on more than one occasion, winning the penalty that saw Marco Reus open the scoring.

The youngster looked brimming with confidence and was unstoppable when in full flow. It remains to be seen whether this is just a purple patch or if he can show this more consistently going forward.

His potential certainly makes him a very intriguing prospect. Not for nothing have Arsenal and Man Utd been linked with him. Yet, it has only been two games and the 19-year-old would do well not to let the big-name interest get to his head. Following in Sancho’s footsteps and heading to the Premier League at this stage could be career suicide; he is not yet ready.

He is under contract at Dortmund until 2028. Neither the club nor the player should be in any rush to end the partnership. On the contrary, Bynoe-Gittens would be well advised to remain in the Bundesliga and attempt to keep this form going for as long as possible.
