Chelsea made a lot of outgoing transfers during the January transfer window, but the Blues can now reveal a new signing too.

In what was a quiet window for arrivals at Stamford Bridge, Enzo Maresca‘s side announced on Tuesday that they did bring in one player in fact.

As detailed by Mail Sport on Monday night, the 19-year-old has joined in a deal worth £12million.

The player in question? Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou on an eight-year contract.

‘I’m very happy,’ Amougou said. ‘It’s an honour for me to sign for such a big club like Chelsea.

‘They believe in young players and the process they have in place to develop us is fantastic.’

Before the transfer window had shut, Chelsea had been enquiring over a number of young midfielders over the past week including Sporting Lisbon’s Dario Essugo on Monday.

Many of those enquiries proved fruitless but Amougou has become the club’s first signing since the summer.

Amougou was also a member of the France team that came second at the U17 World Cup in 2023, when he won the Bronze Ball award based on his individual performances.

He had featured in 17 Ligue 1 matches this season, establishing himself as a key player for a St-Etienne side that currently sit 16th in the table following their promotion last season.

A dynamic and technically gifted midfielder, he is known for his ability to break up play and drive forward with the ball.

The teenager had drawn interest from several other European clubs.

He will join a strong French contingent at Chelsea that already includes Benoit Badiashile, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto and Wesley Fofana.
