Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender made a humiliating mistake playing out from the back against Monterrey in the Champions Cup on Wednesday night – with USMNT teammate Brandon Vazquez intercepting his pass and scoring an easy goal.
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami headed into the game in Mexico trailing 2-1 but after a gritty start to the game, Callender’s error left the team on the brink of an exit. They would go on to lose 3-1 on the night, 5-2 on aggregate.
Thomas Aviles played the ball back to his goalkeeper under minimal pressure and as Callender got the ball under control, Vazquez slowly approached to narrow the goalkeepers passing angle.
Callender then tried to pass across the Monterrey attacker, who intercepted the timid effort and duly converted from close range to give him team a 3-1 aggregate advantage in the 31st minute.
‘Everybody wants to play out the back. It’s a gift, an unnecessary gift,’ FOX analyst Alexi Lalas said at halftime, implying Callender should have hit the ball long.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham made the trip to Mexico for Wednesday’s game
Up to then, it had been a disciplined yet ultimately promising display for Miami, who welcomed Messi back to the starting line up.
The Argentina World Cup winner started in attack alongside Luis Suarez, with Miami owner David Beckham watching on from the stands in Mexico.
Miami were 2-1 down from the first leg with away goals counting, meaning that Messi and his men needed three goals to advance in regular time and two to take it to extra time.
Suarez thought he had one on the stroke of halftime, racing through on goal and slotting left-footed past Esteban Andrada, only for him to be correctly ruled offside.
