Dumfries ‘proud’ to captain Inter for the first time: ‘A special evening’ – Football Italia – March 11 latest

Denzel Dumfries expressed his pride at leading Inter out as captain for the first time during the Champions League victory over Feyenoord on Tuesday night, but sends his best to compatriot Stefan De Vrij, who picked up an injury during the warm-up.

The Nerazzurri booked a spot in the Champions League quarter-final with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Feyenoord, picking up a 2-1 win in San Siro on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu.

Dumfries was also one of Inter’s standout performers on the night, and showed his determination with a fantastic run from right-back all the way down to the left wing to spark an attack in the dying moments, when Inter had practically already qualified.

With a number of key first-team players out of the starting line-up, including regular skipper Lautaro Martinez and regular deputies Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella and Federico Dimarco also absent, Dumfries was entrusted with the captain’s armband for the first time.

Discussing that honour with Sky Sport Italia after full-time, Dumfries said: “I’m proud, it’s a special moment for me. First time as the captain at Inter, I’m really happy. It was a special evening, but I hope De Vrij will recover quickly, he’s a great player.”

He also provided an assessment of his form and Inter’s on a collective level: “(It was) a great game, a great evening for us. I’m happy to go to the quarter-finals against Bayern who are a great team.

“I feel good, I want to carry on like this. I’m happy because I’m playing a lot and playing well.

“We’re a strong team, everyone wants to beat us. We play with a lot of concentration, and we have to keep that up.”
