Bacary Sagna has made the remarkable claim that Bruno Fernandes could pip Mohamed Salah to this year’s PFA Player of the Year award – despite the Liverpool star having more goals and assists for the Premier League leaders than Manchester United’s ’s captain has managed for the team 13th in the table.

Salah is the overwhelming favourite to be crowned player of the season and could still end up winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or despite the Reds being knocked out of the Champions League. He has 32 goals and 22 assists across all competitions, including 27 and 17 in the league.

By comparison Fernandes, who has been heavily criticised by some pundits including Roy Keane, has contributed 16 goals and nine assists – although he has unquestionably been United’s best player during a nightmare campaign.

And former Arsenal and Manchester City full back Sagna, speaking to Paddy Power, reckons the Portugal international should be considered alongside Salah because of how he has stood up in adversity at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes has a chance to win PFA player of the season – he’s been great. He had a lot of stick when things weren’t really going well for him, but I must give him some credit now because he’s really stepped up.

“Maybe he needed more time to adapt, but he’s found his place. He’s the captain for a reason, because he has a big personality and is uplifting the team. We knew about his quality in Portugal, and people were expecting him to step up when he joined Manchester United – he’s finally answering those questions.

“I’m happy for him personally, but it’s also great for the team – Manchester United is under pressure and it’s a time where they need players to step up.

“People expect you to shine as soon as you wear the shirt, and it’s a heavy shirt to wear. He’s playing for United, not any other team, so the fans are very demanding. I’m pleased to see him delivering and showing his quality.”

Fernandes’ performances have been criticised by Keane, with the former United skipper saying the incumbent armband wearer does not show “leadership in action” and “he’s not a fighter.” Equally other ex-players have hailed him for his performances with Gary Pallister recently suggesting he is getting frustrated and deserves more praise.
