Mason Greenwood netted from the spot during Getafe’s clash with Real Betis on Sunday to take his tally to seven for the season in all competitions.

Just eight minutes into the clash at the Benito Villamarin Getafe were awarded a penalty against Manuel Pellegrini’s side and the Manchester United loanee stepped up to take it.

Striking the ball to the goalkeeper’s left with his weaker right foot, Greenwood fired his side into the lead before former Real Madrid star Isco levelled proceedings with another penalty before the interval.

The goal marked Greenwood’s fifth in 18 LaLiga appearances and led to support from some Manchester United fans on social media.

One branded the 22-year-old a ‘generational talent’, while another wrote: ‘Greenwood just took a penalty with he’s right foot omg. Antony pack your bags abeg.’

A further supporter added: ‘I’d love to see Mason Greenwood back at #MUFC – he could probably come in place of Anthony. Can’t help but wonder if that’s a fantasy idea though.’

Greenwood’s goal comes just days after a controversial incident involving the former England international and Jude Bellingham during Real Madrid’s derby victory on Thursday.

After Bellingham connected a crunching tackle on the Getafe forward, a camera caught him mouthing something, believed by some fans to be the word ‘rapist’ in the direction of Greenwood.

After reviewing the footage an expert lip-reader later exclusively told Mail Sport that he was ’97 per cent’ confident that Bellingham had indeed used the insult during the LaLiga clash.

Greenwood had previously been charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour in January 2022 but charges were dropped on February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service following the withdrawal of key witnesses.

LaLiga has no power to sanction players so if experts confirm ‘indisputably’ that Bellingham indeed Greenwood a ‘rapist’ they will pass the matter to the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Sportsmail understands the process will not be quick with the consultation, and then the deliberations of RFEF, taking a matter of weeks rather than days.
