Fans have slammed Andre Onana for a ‘howler’ that allowed Manchester City back into the FA Cup final.

Manchester United defied the odds against the Premier League winners and their arch rivals to life the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, giving Erik ten Hag hope of keeping his job.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were on the score sheet in the first half of the game, and a resolute United defence stood firm until the 87th minute when Doku scored.

The Belgian’s strike made it a nervy final few minutes for United, but they held on the lift the trophy and qualify for Europe at the end of what has, overall, been a disappointing season.

Onana arguably could have done better to keep the shot out, and he has received criticism from fans for his efforts to do so.

‘Wouldn’t be a United game without an Onana howler,’ one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘Onana bro what did we ever do to you, we are bottling this now,’ another wrote.

A third posted: ‘I’ve just seen the replay and that is truly awful from Onana. He’s just not good enough and I don’t think he ever will be.’

Onana has had a mixed debut season at Old Trafford since his £43million move from Inter Milan in the summer, finding himself at fault for a number of goals but also pulling off some impressive saves at times.

United had the 28-year-old to thank at times on Saturday, with the stopper making three saves in the match as his side came under increasing pressure as the game progressed.

He was brought into replace long-term goalkeeper David De Gea due to his ball-playing abilities, and, ultimately, helped the Red Devils to a major trophy in his first season with the club.

‘Will forgive the Onana mistake if we win this, because some of his other saves were magnificent,’ one United fan posted on X on the back of the error.

‘If Onana didn’t make that mistake I would feel confident we have won this,’ another posted before full time.

A third wrote: ‘That was extremely poor from Onana. We slandered De Gea for the same thing.’

The full time whistle triggered ecstatic scenes at Wembley, with captain Bruno Fernandes close to tears as he opened up on the achievement.

Ten Hag was greeted and congratulated by Prince William as he arrived at the top of the Wembley steps to lift the trophy with his side, with the likes of Raphael Varane, who was playing his last game for the Red Devils, all smiles.

Ten Hag had opened up on his United future in a tell-all interview released on the morning of the final, slamming groups of United fans and pundits for their takes on his team.
