Fernando Torres has revealed why he was recently spotted working out in a Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool shirt.

Torres, 40, is a favourite at Anfield having scoring 81 goals in 142 appearances across four years at the club.

The former Spain striker did slightly tarnish his legacy by moving to Chelsea in January 2011 for a then-British record £50m fee, but he is still held in high regard at Liverpool.

And recently Torres, who has bulked up significantly since he retired in 2019, shared a video of a boxing workout he was doing while wearing a Reds top which had Alexander-Arnold’s name on the back.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Torres – who came through the youth system at Atletico Madrid before moving to England – explained the reasoning behind his choice of attire.

‘I think Trent is a special player for the supporters, (and) also for me as a former player,’ he said.

‘It’s really nice to see young players develop the way they are doing and become one of the main players in the first team.

‘I’m sure Liverpool fans love him because he’s one of them and he’s playing on the field at the level he’s doing.

‘It’s similar to what I did in Atletico – from the stands to the pitch and I always felt I was special for the fans.’

He continued: ‘I’m sure Trent is feeling exactly the same. He’s a scouser playing for the first team and being important, one of the main players.

‘For all of us, he’s a special guy. I managed to get his shirt and I like to put it on to do some training.’

Torres played with some iconic Liverpool players during his time at Anfield, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Pepe Reina and Jamie Carragher.

Nevertheless, he revealed he would have loved to have been on the same team as Alexander-Arnold, as he hailed the 25-year-old’s ability.

‘I always think it would be so nice to be able to play with him and receive these kind of crosses he does,’ he added.

‘It would be a pleasure to play in the same team as Trent and be ready to head those crosses. I think it could be a good connection.’

Alexander-Arnold has grown into one of the best right backs in the world since debuting for his boyhood club in 2016.

The academy graduate has racked up more than 300 appearances for the Reds, laying on 82 assists in all competitions.

Alexander-Arnold was appointed as the club’s vice-captain back in the summer and although he is currently out with a knee injury, he is expected to return for the end of season run-in.

Meanwhile, Torres, who is the coach of Atletico Madrid’s Under-19 team, is set to play at Anfield this weekend for the Liverpool Legends when they take on Ajax Legends.
