Marco Friedl has backtracked on the criticism he expressed after Werder Bremen’s draw with Borussia Dortmund.

It caused a stir when Werder captain Marco Friedl criticized the club’s transfer policy after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund.

“I’m not unhappy with our squad, I’m happy with the players, but I would have liked to see a bit more depth,” Friedl said after the final whistle.

His comments, unsurprisingly, did not go down well with Werder boss Clemens Fritz, who felt it was “unnecessary” to make such a statement publicly.

In an interview with Kicker, Friedl now puts his critical comments into perspective.

“Especially after a game like this, you’re more emotional, you don’t always say things the way you mean them,” the 26-year-old Austrian explained.

“My words didn’t come out the way I wanted them to. I didn’t want it to cause such a stir – and I didn’t think it was all that cool.”

He added that “a clear discussion was sought by sport management” following the match.

“In retrospect, I could have chosen my words differently,” Friedl admitted.
