Gary Neville criticises ‘rash’ Robert Sanchez and tells him to ‘be clever’ after Chelsea goalkeeper brings down Rasmus Hojlund for a penalty during 1-1 draw with Manchester United

Gary Neville criticised Robert Sanchez after the Chelsea goalkeeper gave away a penalty against Manchester United. 

Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by the Red Devils, who played for the first time since sacking Erik ten Hag in the Premier League, after a 5-2 win over Leicester in midweek. 

Sanchez brought down Rasmus Hojlund inside the box and Bruno Fernandes converted from 12 yards to open the scoring after 70 minutes. 

And Neville insists the Spanish goalkeeper could have done better to avoid making contact with Hojlund. 

‘I thought it was poor from [Wesley] Fofana to start with. A really smart goalkeeper here just leaves his hands away,’ Neville said while commentating for Sky Sports.

‘There’s that little reach, just be clever. Let him dive. Let VAR see it. It’s so rash from the goalkeeper.’

Moises Caicedo’s superb strike four minutes later ensured the points were shared at Old Trafford. 

Speaking to BBC, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca said: ‘We knew it was a difficult game for many reasons. We scored, we came back. After the goal we tried to win.

‘We are happy because we knew how difficult it would be.

‘The [United] players want to prove they’re good enough. A new manager with different ideas so we had to prepare a different way.’

Chelsea, who now sit fourth in the table, will seek to return to winning ways next Sunday when they host Arsenal.
