Arsenal legend Ian Wright has criticised Jakub Kiwior‘s performance against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Kiwior played left-back for the Gunners as they hosted Bayern in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The Pole only played 45 minutes, however, as Mikel Arteta was clearly unhappy with his first half showing.

Kiwior, who prefers to play in the centre of the defence, has been asked to play on the left several times this season.

Arsenal have the best defensive record in the Premier League, so the experiment has seemingly worked more often that not.

Having said that, the 24-year-old struggled immensely against former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

“Jakub Kiwior was getting cooked by Leroy Sane, let’s have that right,” Wright stated on his Wrighty’s House podcast. “He was scared of him.

“I was a little bit disappointed with Kiwior. He was stuck between, ‘Do I go all the way in’ or, ‘Do I drop off of him’. Act like you’re going to get tight then drop off.

“Let him get the touch, so then he’s either going to have to knock it past you and you’ve got half a chance of getting something on it or foul him!”

Arsenal’s left-back options

Arsenal’s other options for the left-back position include Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was brought on for Kiwior against Munich.

He is more comfortable in possession, with the ability to step into midfield, but is probably no better defensively.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, on the other hand, is a very good defender, although he is right-footed.

Jurrien Timber would be Arteta’s first choice but he has been out virtually all season with an ACL injury.
