It’s thought that discussions with the Lille player’s agents have taken place ahead of a possible move next summer, relays TBR Football.

The 24-year-old has become a standout talent since departing Manchester United in 2020. After a brief loan stint in Portugal with Boavista, the midfielder is one of the first names on the team sheet with Lille in Ligue 1.

Over the last three years, Gomes has amassed 129 appearances for the French club. Last September he earned his first senior England cap, under interim Three Lions boss Lee Carsley.

But now his future at Lille is now uncertain. With just over six months remaining on his current contract, so can talk to foreign clubs in January. Tottenham are actively pursuing him, along with his teammate, Jonathan David, whose contract is up at the same time.

Both Gomes and David will be eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs outside France starting in January.

Gomes’ journey began at the United academy in 2006 as a six-year-old. He went on to make his debut in 2017, coming on during a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace. He signed his first professional deal with the club but subsequently struggled to cement a regular spot in United’s senior squad.

By the time he left in 2020, he had made just 10 first-team appearances. He said of his Old Trafford exit in 2021: “There was a contract there that was on the table for me to sign. Everyone always says I left for money which, for me, makes no sense.

“It was more to do with the pathway and the opportunity that Lille were bringing. It was a big step, and I knew it was going to be one.”

And in September he said about a possible return. “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no,” he said about returning, but Gomes then added: “As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad, I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all.”
