There are no winners in a relegation season. That is unless your name is Vincent Kompany and you land the Bayern Munich job, despite taking Burnley down with a whimper.

There were plenty of casualties among that Burnley squad, but few could count themselves quite as unfortunate as goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

A star of the Clarets’ title-winning season the previous year, Muric was jettisoned from the starting XI last summer following the signing of James Trafford.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna had seen`enough, though, to know Muric was the man for him between the sticks as his club returned to the Premier League.

Saturday’s goalless draw with Brighton gave a good indication why, with the 25-year-old making six crucial saves to keep the high-flying Seagulls at bay.

‘This was a big step forward and showed everyone why we brought him to the football club,’ said McKenna, after Muric had helped Ipswich keep their first clean sheet of the season.

‘He’s still in the process of getting up to his absolute best and there’s a lot to come. Aro’s ceiling is really high for a goalkeeper with the attributes he has.’
