Jack Grealish fumes at match officials as Moises Caicedo goes unpunished for nasty challenge – as Man City star is forced off against Chelsea to spark fresh injury worry for Pep Guardiola

  • Jack Grealish was forced off after a nasty high challenge from Moises Caicedo
  • It has sparked fresh concerns that his injury-hit season could see more trouble

Jack Grealish was livid after Moises Caicedo avoided a red card for following through in a nasty challenge.

The Manchester City winger received treatment and had to be replaced by Jeremy Doku 66 minutes into their 1-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea.

Grealish was fuming with officials and ranted as he took his place on the bench, with his withdrawal sparking fresh concerns after an injury-hit season.

He has already missed parts of the season with injury troubles but has returned refreshed since the international break and will want to avoid another spell on the sidelines.

Caicedo was already on a yellow card and was fortunate to avoid being sent off – and Grealish made his opinion clear to fourth official Darren England.

It has been a frustrating season for the England international, who needs every minute on the pitch as the European Championship approaches.

Doku has often been preferred and has been a breath of fresh air with his direct and scintillating style, while Grealish has been a more subdued version of himself this campaign.

At half-time, Frank Lampard urged Grealish to take more risks and hinted at how he thinks he has been shackled by Pep Guardiola’s possession-based system.

Instead of trying to beat a full-back one-on-one, Grealish will now often turn inside or backwards to find a safe pass – no doubt an influence of Guardiola.

‘The first 15 or 20 minutes, I was thinking, every single touch you’re going backwards,’ Lampard told BBC Sport.

‘I know they won the Treble last season, but you’re seeing a wonderful player here whi is gifted at going past players. After 15 or 20 minutes he decided to do that.

‘He’s better than just keeping possession and drawing other players in to him. Thev’re won the Treble and we know how great they are and it works but sometimes with Jack, I feel as if he sometimes plays the easy option.

‘I know that’s what Pep wants him to do, to keep possession and draws two or three players in and push it away to someone who’s not under pressure at all. He’s a very gifted player who can go past players.

‘He needs to understand – when the ball moves quick and he’s one-on-one, here’s a chance you can really get at someone. What you do when you slow it down and reject taking it one-on-one, the Chelsea players are like, “ok.”
