Jackson saves Chelsea GOTM but Blues have new worrying injury concern

Nicolas Jackson rescued Chelsea’s Goal of the Month award as they beat Brighton to advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

But whilst the Blues will be soaking in their much-needed win, there is concern brewing surrounding a potential injury to another one of their key stars.

Chelsea’s £32m summer signing netted his side’s winning goal and his second goal of the campaign, just over one month on after opening his account against Luton, as the Blues beat the Seagulls 1-0.

Aside from helping his side secure their first win since August, Jackson also scored the senior side’s first goal this month, ending fans’ concerns over how September’s goal of the month award was going to work.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Mauricio Pochettino said: “Good response from the team, I was very pleased with the performance again and now happy for the victory and important to go through in the competition and build our trust and momentum. I hope we can bring this momentum to the future.

“[Jackson] Yes, very pleased, I think when the striker scores it is important. He needed to feel the net and important for him, very pleased for him.”

The Blues have already bettered last season’s run in the competition that saw them knocked out by Man City in the third round and will next face Championship side Blackburn at Stamford Bridge.

But despite having another cup tie on the horizon to look forward to, Blues fans also face the prospect of being without one of their key stars for their more immediate fixtures – Ben Chilwell.

“Yes, we need to assess tomorrow but I think it is hamstring,” Pochettino confirmed after the game.

An injury to Chilwell will come as a huge blow to Chelsea, who are already dealing with the absence of other key stars who are sidelined with injuries.

Skipper Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Marcus Bettinelli, Carney Chukwuemeka and Benoit Badiashile are all out of action, too.

The injury-stricken Blues next face Fulham in a west London derby on Monday night, live on talkSPORT, as they hope to carry the momentum from Wednesday’s win into the Premier League.
