Jamie Carragher has pinpointed the most important game of Liverpool in the current campaign.

His views came after the Reds moved closer to the Premier League triumph following their 2-0 win over Newcastle to boost them 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Arne Slot‘s side enjoys a stunning campaign so far after most of Liverpool’s domestic rivals have collectively dropped their performance – with both Manchester City and Arsenal thought to be out of the competition at the current stage.

While the Premier League title holders have struggled since the beginning of the season, the Gunners suffered a huge blow on Tuesday following a disappointing goalless draw against Nottingham Forest.

The Reds have been unbeaten in their last 24 Premier League clashes since their 0-1 defeat against Forest at Anfield.

However, Carragher, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, has shared his views that the September loss was not Liverpool’s most important game of the season.

‘I was thinking, you just mentioned the Forest game, and the Forest game came really early in the season,’ said the Red icon in a discussion with Ian Wright.

‘And I think a game that was really important, nothing to do with the league, they played AC Milan away.

‘Few days later. They get beat 1-0, I think AC Milan scored within three or four minutes and it was that thing of like they end up winning; I think it was 3-1.

Just three days later, after their defeat by Forest at Anfield, Liverpool went to face AC Milan at Giuseppe Meazza for their first Champions League clash of the season.

The match was well-documented as a stunning comeback by Arne Slot’s men, who managed to score three goals after Christian Pulisic gave the lead for the Italian side.

Centre backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both responded in the first half with head strikes, while Dominik Szoboszlai scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute.

‘If you look back at that game, sort of now because you mention Forest, and I’m thinking that was a big moment for the manager.

‘That was probably a massive turning point, that AC Milan game. They’re still not the AC Milan of old but it’s still San Siro, a big game.’

Since the defeat by Forest, Liverpool were unbeaten across all competitions until being beaten by Tottenham in mid-January in the first leg of the Carabao Cup.

However, they managed to overturn the situation by beating Spurs 4-0 in the second game to qualify them for the final, where Slot’s side will face Newcastle on March 16.

Liverpool finished first in the Champions League group stage, two points above LaLiga giants Barcelona.

Wright responded to Carragher’s views by praising Mohamed Salah’s performance this season, who has added another assist to his statistics against Newcastle on Wednesday.

He said: ‘We’re looking at Mo Salah having, I think the greatest season ever.’

‘He’s just absolutely incredible, he’s definitely been my favourite player of the season,’ added Jill Scott.
