Jonny Evans has got behind under-pressure Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana following his difficult start to life as the club’s new number one.

The shot-stopper took the blame for United’s lacklustre 4-3 Champions League group stage defeat against Bayern Munich in midweek after producing another struggling performance.

The German side opened the scoring after Leroy Sane‘s tame effort somehow broke through Onana’s hands and into the back of the net with the £47m summer arrival admitting afterwards he had ‘let the team down’.

However, Evans has joined other United team-mates in supporting the Cameroonian with captain Bruno Fernandes similarly stating ‘he hasn’t got to take any blame’.

Evans rejoined United on a one-year deal after spending eight-years away from the club and has backed Onana to follow the same path as previous goalkeeper David de Gea who endured a similar tricky start at the 13-time Premier League winners.

‘It’s a big thing for him to do that [take the blame after the match],’ Evans told TNT Sports.

‘He didn’t have to do that. But I think it’s very difficult for any player coming to a new club to hit the ground running and maybe he’s been a bit harsh on himself.’

‘I’ve seen that quite a lot. And I’ve experienced that myself. He’s replacing David de Gea, who was here for a long time.’

‘Again, remember, David at the start of his career at Manchester United, maybe went through a bit of a tough time to settle in and we saw what sort of career he would go on to have for this club.’

United manager Erik ten Hag made the decision to end De Gea’s 12-year tenure at the club in favour of making Onana his new trusted goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old arrived in Manchester off the back of an impressive campaign with Inter Milan that saw the club make it to the Champions League final, however, things haven’t got off to a smooth start.

De Gea similarly struggled at the start of his career in England when Sir Alex Ferguson recruited him to be Edwin van der Sar’s replacement and eventually navigated his way through a tricky start to become a Premier League great.

United have lost three of their opening five Premier League matches and are facing a crisis situation that will be made a whole lot worse if they fail to take three convincing points against Burnley on Saturday evening.
