As the hosts, Holstein Kiel started the tie off on the front foot and won a corner within the opening minutes.
From this corner, the Kiel cross struck a Bochum hand in the box and a penalty was awarded within the first five minutes for Holstein Kiel.
This penalty was then converted by Steven Skrzybski down the middle.
Shortly after, Bochum also had a penalty claim but this time VAR did not rule in the away side’s favour as it was deemed that the ball did not hit Marco Komenda’s hand.
Just short of the half hour mark, goalscorer Steven Skryzbski was forced off due to injury for Kiel.
During the 37th minute, Bochum player Matúš Bero’s play in the centre of the pitch gave him the chance to set striker Boadu through one-on-one with the keeper.
This time, Myron Boadu levels the game at 1-1 by finished in the bottom corner.
Minutes later, a Bochum cross found Giorgos Masouras at the back post who headed it across goal to Myron Boadu who tapped the ball into the net to put the away side 2-1 up.
With seven more shots than the home side Kiel in the first half, Bochum went into half time with a 2-1 lead.
After the restart, during the 48th minute, Kiel hit the bar as Armin Gigović was unlucky with his first-time effort.
Just after, however, Holstein Kiel managed to get the equaliser as David Zec headed home from close range following a free kick.
Near the hour mark, Kiel prevented another Bochum goal as Armin Gigović cleared the ball off the line.
Holstein Kiel hit the post in the 68th minute as Nicolai Remberg’s shot went through a crowd of players into the right post.
During the 73rd minute, Holstein Kiel captain Lewis Holtby scored after Shūto Machino passed it to him in the box and therefore left him able to smash it into the goal.
However, after a foul was seen in the buildup, VAR disallowed the goal.
In one of the last notable actions of the game, Patrick Drewes produced a superb save after Kiel defender David Zec’s flick on made him react quickly to claw it from goal.
The match ended a draw with neither side moving from the bottom two of the Bundesliga.
