Kieran Trippier wants a new challenge away from Newcastle, but Eddie Howe has told the defender he needs him as part of his squad.

The England star was told by the head coach last week that he would not be starting the season opener versus Southampton and that Bruno Guimaraes was the new team captain, as Mail Sport exclusively revealed earlier this week.

Trippier had previously worn the armband in the absence of Jamaal Lascelles.

He was then an unused substitute during the 1-0 win over the Saints and decided to play 45 minutes of Monday’s Under-21 fixture against Sunderland, with Howe in attendance.

Trippier has 12 months to run on his contract at St James’ Park and would be open to leaving in the coming week if the right opportunity came along.

Atalanta and Galatasaray have shown an interest, as have West Ham, although he does not want to move to London. Everton have also been mentioned.

The 33-year-old has seen key allies Amanda Staveley and Dan Ashworth leave the club this year and it is thought he believes the time is right for a fresh start, be that a loan or permanent move.

Trippier was also the subject of interest from Bayern Munich in January, but he ended up staying on Tyneside.
