Joselu scored two late goals to send Real Madrid to the Champions League final with a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, securing a 4-3 aggregate victory.
The German side had taken the lead in the second half through Alphonso Davies, but Joselu’s quickfire double at the death means Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund at Wembley in the final.
The first half passed with both sides having some promising openings, but it was Real Madrid who looked the most likely to find the opening goal of the night.
Bayern’s surprise lead
Rodrygo came closest as he hit the post and then saw his rebound saved by Manuel Neuer, but the fact there were two balls on the pitch at the time would have resulted in controversy had the Brazilian scored.
That set the tone for the second half in which Neuer became the only player keeping Bayern in with a chance. Real Madrid applied lots of pressure and looked poised to take a deserved lead, with Vinicius Jr clearly having the beating of Joshua Kimmich.
Completely against the run of play, it was the German side who scored the opener with just over 20 minutes to go. Davies, linked heavily with a summer move to Real Madrid, cut inside Antonio Rudiger onto his weaker right foot and unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner, stunning the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid fight back
Real Madrid almost immediately had the ball in the net but Nacho Fernandez had fouled Kimmich in the box by seeming to push his face with two hands, so the goal was chalked off.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side continued to apply the pressure and it finally told in the 87th minute as Neuer spilt a tame shot and Joselu nipped in to score the equalizer.
The former Stoke City striker was not done there, as early in the nine minutes of stoppage-time, he turned in an Antonio Rudiger cross and after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was given and Real Madrid were ahead.
Matthijs de Ligt thought he scored an equalizer at the death but the assistant referee had flagged for an offside just before his shot hit the back of the net, with replays showing that it was an extremely tight call.
With Harry Kane having already been taken off, Bayern had little to offer and saw their dream of repeating the 2013 Champions League final fall away.
