  • Manchester United in a mess – they have a collapse in them – It’s All Kicking Off

Manchester United‘s weather misery continued on Saturday as their under-21 team’s match away to Tottenham Hotspur was frozen off.

As the first-team embarked on a three-hour bus journey to Newcastle after their flight was cancelled, the youngsters saw their Premier League 2 game at the Hotspur Way training ground postponed.

Spurs said the pitch was partly frozen following cold weather and officials decided the 1pm kick-off shouldn’t go ahead after an inspection.

Travis Binnion’s United side have won three, drawn two and lost three of their eight Premier League 2 matches so far this season to sit 11th in the 26-team league.

Spurs, meanwhile, lead the way having won all eight of their games so far.

The game promised to be highly entertaining with Spurs and United the division’s highest scorers – with 29 goals apiece.

The format of the under-21 competition was changed ahead of this season, with the previous two-tier system replaced with just one division featuring all the Category One academies in England.

The 26 clubs were divided into five pots based on their performances over the past three seasons.

A draw was made to determine each club’s 20 regular season fixtures with teams playing each club in their own seeding pot once, as well as three to five clubs in all other pots either home or away.

After the 20 rounds of games have been completed, the top 16 teams advance to a knockout competition to decide the champion.

United’s under-18 fixture with Wolves at their Carrington training ground did go ahead.

Erik ten Hag and his players arrived at Manchester Airport at 10am on Saturday morning, only to be told their flight to Newcastle had been cancelled due to the weather and technical difficulties.

They boarded a bus for the three-hour road journey to Tyneside, when the flight would have only been around half-an-hour.

Temperatures at Manchester Airport were barely above freezing on Saturday morning and are forecast to hover around -1C in Newcastle at kick-off as the United Kingdom is gripped by a cold snap.

Man United are looking to recover from the disappointment of Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in Istanbul which left their Champions League last-16 hopes dangling by a thread.

But they are the form team in the Premier League, having won five of their last six matches to keep in touch with the top four.

Seventh-placed Newcastle are just a point behind Man United in sixth and have top four ambitions of their own.
