Man United summer signing Manuel Ugarte provides honest assessment on his first full 90 minutes at Old Trafford after uninspiring draw with FC Twente

Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has admitted he underperformed in his first full 90 minutes in a Red Devils shirt against FC Twente.

United were forced to settle for a point against the Dutch side at Old Trafford in their opening match of the new Europa League campaign.

Christian Eriken’s superb first-half strike was cancelled out 22 minutes from time by Sam Lammers, following some abject defending, on Wednesday night.

Erik ten Hag handed Ugarte only his second start for the club, after two Premier League appearances from the bench, following his £51million move from PSG in the summer.

However, the Uruguayan largely struggled at the base of the United midfield and has taken to social media app Instagram to criticise his own display.

‘I’m the first to make self-criticism,’ wrote Ugarte. ‘It wasn’t a great match personally. We have to keep working.’

Ugarte’s passing left a little to be desired during the match, he only completed 81 per cent of his passes on the night.

But despite being far from his best, Ten Hag decided to keep the 23-year-old on the pitch for the entirety of the match.

While his self-criticism can be commended, Ugarte’s United team-mates wanted to offer him support in the comments of his post.

Fellow South American star, Alejandro Garnacho offered words of encouragement with a simple response to the post, saying ‘let’s go, brother’.

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they face to-four rivals Tottenham in a crunch clash at Old Trafford.

In spite of his disappointing performance in midweek, Ugarte will be hoping he has done enough to get the nod in the holding midfield role against Spurs.
