The Rashford situation has developed into a source of acute embarrassment at Old Trafford in recent months, and it appears that the 27-year-old has one final blow to deliver to his former club.

Head coach Ruben Amorim had taken the unprecedented step of exiling the winger prior to Christmas, with the Portuguese making an example of the England international for his apparent unwillingness to show a better attitude in training.

The issue is one that has bubbled away under previous managers but has only just been tackled head on.

Rashford’s form, of course, allowed him no leeway. In 24 games for the Red Devils this season, he offered just seven goals and three assists, with only four of his strikers coming in the Premier League.

United fought a battle just to get him off their books over the winter, but they face another one in the summer to sell him as they race to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

United to bank just €24m from Rashford sale

Rashford’s form has shown some promise at Aston Villa, though he is yet to get off the mark in eight matches, of which he has only started three.

The Villans do have a €48 million (£40m) purchase option in the loan deal, which is still some way below the player’s €58m Estimated Transfer Value (ETV). According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils may bank only half the transfer fee they are paid.

In order to get him off their books, United will likey pay off the remainder of Rashford’s contract, which has another three years to run. It is suggested that a settlement may come around the €24m mark, cutting the earning of the Old Trafford side in two if they are successful in selling him to Villa.

Rashford’s wages are set to be a major impediment to any summer sale and hence United are willing to take such a big hit.
