“He’s aiming to win another championship in a different country, massive move for Australian football.”

Mata had been without a club for eight months. The 36-year-old left Japanese side Vissel Kobe in January having made just a single appearance for the club.

He was then spotted training with Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland this summer but ultimately didn’t sign for them.

Mata won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 but is now heading to Australia to play in their top division.

What did Juan Mata win at Man Utd?

Mata spent eight years with Man Utd, where he won the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. After his spell at Old Trafford, Mata headed to Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he won the Super Lig.

He then moved to Vissel Kobe last year, where his side won the J1 League.

On the ESPN FC show, Mata was asked about the impact of Bruno Fernandes.

“I can tell you that for me, there is a great leader in there right now, which is the captain, Bruno,” he said. “I should tell to all young players to look up to him. I cannot tell you how important he is for the club and not only because of what he’s done in the last games, scoring two goals and winning the game [against Sheffield United], but his consistency within the years that he’s been playing for the club is just incredible.

“He’s a top, top player, but he’s even better as a person. So for me, the culture of the club should be built around him. He’s a great example for all the new generation, the players that are playing now for the team, [Alejandro] Garnacho, [Kobbie] Mainoo, [Rasmus] Højlund, to look up to him the way he trains, the way he behaves.
