Sporting CP are set to sack Joao Pereira mere weeks after he replaced Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, according to Portuguese media and Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils poached Sporting’s most successful coach in years when they appointed Amorim in early November to succeed Erik ten Hag, who had overseen Man Utd’s worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Amorim, on the other hand, had the Lisbon giants flying high in Portugal’s domestic top flight and on course to defend last season’s title, his second in charge of Sporting.

His premature departure was gutting for Sporting as they were powerless to stop the 39-year-old from leaving mid-season due to a release clause and it has proved to be a fateful transfer.

Amorim was replaced by former player and reserve team manager Joao Pereira, but the 40-year-old is now already on the chopping block.

Sporting to sack Pereira

According to Record and Fabrizio Romano, Sporting have made the decision to part ways with Pereira after just six weeks due to the team’s inability to recapture their previous form under the new head coach.

While a final decision is not entirely set in stone, it seems that it is only a matter of time before Pereira’s departure is announced. The coach is expected to be given his marching orders before the derby with Benfica on December 29.

According to A Bola, Sporting will trigger the €4 million release clause of Vitoria Guimaraes head coach Rui Borges to replace Pereira before the clash with their Lisbon rivals later this month.

Pereira won just three of his eight matches in charge, losing four times and drawing 0-0 at the weekend with mid-table Gil Vicente. Between November 26 and December 10, Sporting lost four consecutive matches for the first time since 2012.
