Manchester United have already begun transfer plans under Ruben Amorim with reports that a midfielder could be targeted in January.

Amorim formally began his job as the new United manager this week and his first game in charge will come on Sunday against Ipswich.

The Portuguese boss was complimentary of Mason Mount in the build-up to the game but Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed that United could still target another midfielder in January.

Atalanta star Ederson is one player whom United have long-considered and the Brazilian is said to be ‘highly-valued internally’ by the club, according to Plettenberg.

The 25-year-old’s deal expires in 2027 and United are ‘discussing and considering’ him as a signing as soon as the January transfer window.

However, United’s rivals Manchester City are also believed to be interested in Ederson and could provide competition for his signature, with Newcastle also having held a long-term interest too.

United also consider move for Bayern Munich star

Amorim will likely not make a firm decision on any transfers in or out until he has fully assessed the squad and his comments detailing his ‘love’ for Mount indicates that the United boss could try first to get the best out of his current crop of players.

But with question marks over the long-term futures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen among others, a midfielder in the mould of Amorim’s tactical style will likely be a high priority, along with a left back.

Plettenberg also spoke of United’s long-standing interest in Leon Goretzka, with Bayern Munich keen to cash in on the midfielder in January before the expiry of his contract next summer.

Bayern are hoping to raise funds to eventually sign Florian Wirtz and Plettenberg believes a move abroad is the likely outcome for Goretzka, with United still having the 29-year-old ‘on their radar’.
