Marseille Move on to Europa League Quarterfinals

Villarreal was the more aggressive side in the first half generating 13 total shots as the Spanish team aimed for a comeback. The first goal for the Yellow Submarine came in the 32nd minute courtesy of Étienne Capoue. 

Despite the high volume of shots in the first 45 minutes, Villarreal only managed to score one goal as OM went into the dressing room with a 4-1 aggregate lead. In the second half, Marcelino García Toral and his squad wasted little time scoring the second goal. 

Following a VAR review that confirmed the goal, Alexander Sørloth made it 2-0 after scoring in the 54th minute and 4-2 on aggregate as Villarreal now needed two goals to force extra time.

Late in the contest, the La Liga team scored their third goal thanks to Yerson Mosquera to make the aggregate score 4-3. Villarreal searched for a fourth goal to force extra time, but it wasn’t to be.

After facing an onslaught of Villarreal’s attack, Marseille scored the insurance goal in added time in the second half as Jonathan Clauss’ goal dashed the hopes of the home supporters. 

Jean-Louis Gasset and his team saw their five-game win streak across all competitions snapped, but they’re through to the next round. OM now needs to turn the page on this challenging night and prepare themselves for the Europa League quarterfinals.
