Monaco coach defends Balogun after penalty nightmare

The 22-year-old United States star was handed his first start since arriving from Arsenal as Wissam Ben Yedder was left on the bench for the Côte d’Azur derby. However, it proved a night to forget for Balogun as he had two penalties saved by Nice goalkeeper Marcin Bułka, one in each half.

“We have two number 10s who are in great form at the moment, so I was not going to play with two forwards as well,” Hütter said of his decision to start Balogun in front of Takumi Minamino and Aleksandr Golovin. “But I am not going to justify my decision every time either Ben Yedder or Balogun plays. Balogun was very good on the pitch but he was also unlucky. We will help him to bounce back. We win together and we lose together and he will help us a lot in the future.”

Farioli goes one game at a time

Hütter added that his team should at least have kept a clean sheet, but Nice left the Stade Louis II with all three points as Jérémie Boga snatched a stoppage-time winner. The result propelled Les Aiglons to the top of the table above Monaco ahead of the rest of the weekend’s action.

“This derby victory gives us great joy,” said the Nice coach, Franceso Farioli, whose side also won away at Paris Saint-Germain last weekend. “But it would be dangerous to look at the league table now. We need to go one game at a time, enjoy the good moments but not lose our heads.”

“We have deserved these last two victories, but we had a lot of luck this time. It is very rare to win a game after conceding two penalties, and that both are saved. So Marcin deserves a lot of credit.
