Mykhailo Mudryk’s difficulties at Chelsea go on, yet the Ukraine international is still considered by many a player who has supreme potential.

Mudryk was omitted from the Chelsea squad that lost 2-1 against Liverpool on Sunday entirely. Not only did the 23-year-old miss out on the starting XI, he also failed to claim a place on the bench for the big Anfield clash.

Enzo Maresca’s decision appears to have propelled the Ukrainian further towards the Stamford Bridge exit, with the Blues reportedly willing to broker a loan deal in the January transfer window due to a lack of clubs with the ability to buy the €70 million signing outright.

There are, however, still some giants monitoring Mudryk’s situation. Liverpool and Barcelona are both thought to be attentive to his case, still intrigued by his raw talent, which Chelsea have been simply unable to tap.

A better option, though, has emerged for the Blues.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille are showing an interest in Mudryk, according to Fichajes, and a loan deal to the French side is being considered.

Why is this such an important development?

De Zerbi previously coached Mudryk to terrific success at Shakhtar Donetsk and the Italian’s confidence in the attacker could only help both his form and confidence. Should these be unlocked over six or 18 months with the Ligue 1 club, he could return to Chelsea a different player.

As recently as December 2022, while still in charge of Brighton, De Zerbi claimed that Mudryk can become the best player in the world.

“Mudryk can win the Ballon d’Or in the future,” the now-Marseille head coach said. “I know the value of Mudryk. He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Mudryk could become key at Marseille

Mudryk, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €48.6m, would instantly become a regular at Marseille, according to SciSports, and could develop into a key player with the side challenging PSG and Monaco at the top of Ligue 1.

His presence at the club would come at the expense of current left wingers Luis Henrique and summer signing Jonathan Rowe, who has impressed since joining from Norwich.

Nevertheless, with De Zerbi such a fan of Mudryk, the Marseille boss may well see this as a sacrifice worth taking.

And from Chelsea’s perspective, this seems the move best suited to getting their expensive Ukraine star fit and firing.
