The striker was one of the protagonists of the summer transfer window. Chelsea were chasing the 20-year-old for months before eventually reaching a breakthrough in talks with Atletico Madrid.

After Conor Gallagher rejected a move to Aston Villa, which would have seen Jhon Duran head the other way, Chelsea offered the England midfielder to Atletico and a deal was struck.

In exchange, Omorodion was ready to head to Stamford Bridge. However, after completing his medical, the deal mysteriously collapsed and it is still not entirely clear why, though there have been suggestions that one party decided to change the terms of the move at the last minute.

However, according to the man himself, it was an act of divine intervention.

Omorodion on Chelsea transfer

“It was a very difficult summer,” Omorodion told RTVE. “I went through a very difficult time because, after all, everyone knows that I was close to signing [for Chelsea], but the truth is that it didn’t happen. It was for a reason: God didn’t want it!”

The Spain international ended up signing for Porto instead on a much cheaper deal than what Chelsea would have had to pay, arriving for just €15 million upfront. His start to life in Portugal has been exceptional.

Omorodion has scored seven goals in seven games for his new club, including a stunning brace against Man Utd last week. “I am also very grateful to Porto for giving me the opportunity when the situation was difficult for me and I am very happy with my current situation.

I have put the past behind me and now I am focused on what is to come.”
