Osasuna are facing disciplinary action from LaLiga after fans chanted ‘Greenwood die’ at Mason Greenwood during their match against Getafe, but their manager Jagoba Arrasate has urged the league to also address taunts aimed at his side.

Greenwood made his return to football after 20 months during Getafe’s 3-2 win against Osasuna on Sunday.

The forward’s last match came for Man United against West Ham in January 2022, shortly before he was suspended by the club following his arrest on charges of attempted rape and assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped their case against him in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

Man United eventually concluded Greenwood would leave the club to restart his career after an internal investigation, with the 21-year-old moving to Getafe on loan.

Chants of ‘Greenwood die’ rained down from Osasuna supporters during their match against Getafe, as the forward was introduced as a late substitute.

Greenwood forced an 86th-minute corner from which Nemanja Maksimovic headed in the winner.

The Athletic reported post-match that LaLiga will open a ‘legal and disciplinary process’ over the chants to Greenwood.

Osasuna boss Arrasate condemned the chants aimed at Greenwood post match, but insisted Getafe fans chanting ‘f*** Osasuna’ should also be under the spotlight.

‘The chants of ‘f*** Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too,’ Arrasate said.

‘He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say.

‘He is a great player and in the end it will be very good for Getafe.

‘But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.’

Greenwood’s return had taken place at Getafe’s Coliseum stadium, with home supporters having roared their approval when his name was announced before the game and when he came on.

Getafe have been viewed by United as a club out of the spotlight where he can rehabilitate, but the Spanish side have been the subject of much scrutiny.

Many have slammed Getafe for being ‘tone deaf’ ahead of the player’s grand unveiling earlier in September.

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas praised Greenwood’s impact during his first appearance for the club.

‘We were pleasantly surprised. He offered us a lot going forward,’ Bordalas said.

‘We are being patient with him because he hasn’t played for many months. Today must have been a very special day for him because footballers want to play.

‘We have seen the response from the fans and from his team-mates. We have to be calm but his contribution was excellent.’
