The 2024 January transfer window may have been the quietest in recent memory – but that’s not to say that Premier League clubs don’t splash out in the winter months.

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, 51 clubs have featured in England’s top flight and have bought and sold players to improve their squads during that time.

The winter window is traditionally a lot slower than its summer counterpart given that clubs are more likely to stick with their squads and make adjustments in the off-season.

But data collected by Mail Sport reveals that Premier League clubs have still shelled out a staggering £3.7billion in the winter months alone in a 32-year period.

But before we get onto the biggest – and lowest – spenders, let’s take a quick look at how transfer windows came to be.

Up until the 2002-03 campaign when the current transfer window system was introduced, Premier League clubs were free to sign and move on players throughout the season until March 31.

Transfer windows were then introduced as part of an agreement with the European Commission as they looked to regulate how transfers worked. This saw prescribed periods for players to complete moves, which came in the summer and winter months.

So with that in mind, spending figures during the months of December to February were taken as the ‘winter window’ period between 1992 and 2002.

But which clubs have notoriously splashed the cash during the middle of the season and which sides have been a little more reluctant to fork out for players?

Two clubs will likely come to mind when talking about big spenders – Manchester City and Chelsea. But it is in fact the Blues that have blown their competition out of the water when it comes to spending in the winter window.

In total, Chelsea have spent a staggering £632million in this time – more than double that of the next biggest spenders Liverpool, who have forked out £295m on winter transfers.

Even more amazingly, Blues chairman Todd Boehly paid an eye-watering £323m last January – that’s more than what every other club’s total January spend since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.

Newcastle are the Premier League’s third biggest spenders, with their total reaching £280m, while Tottenham are fourth in the list having paid £238m in transfer fees.

Man City and Arsenal then make up the top five, with City splashing out £227m during their time in the Premier League while the Gunners have spent £212m.

Surprisingly, 13-time Premier League champions Manchester United have spent £163m in the winter months since 1992, making them only the ninth biggest spenders in that time, with Everton and Aston Villa spending more.

Interestingly, just three clubs haven’t spent a single penny in the winter windows, with Blackpool, Huddersfield and Luton not paying a single penny during the January transfer window.
