Co-commentator Ally McCoist quipped during the match whether Aston Villa supporter Prince William would have been among the fans watching the side.

Prince William gave an unprecedent personal response to the TNT Sports account to revel in Aston Villa’s victory, with the Royal Family typically refraining from interacting with commercial companies.

Prince William responded to the TNT Sports post, which had highlighted how the Villains are the first side to three games in the Champions League this season to confirm he had seen the match.

‘Of course I was watching, @Ally_McCoist9 #UTV W,’ a post from the Kensington Royal account read.

Prince William and McCoist have lauded Aston Villa’s impressive run in the Champions League to date.

The pair had discussed the club when McCoist received his OBE earlier this month at Windsor Castle, which came ahead of Aston Villa’s stunning win over Bayern Munich.

‘Such a proud moment for myself and my family, I am humbled to be receiving my OBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle today,’ McCoist said.

‘Thank you for all the support and messages it means so much. Did we speak about @AVFCOfficial ?? That’s between the Prince and I.

‘I think the fact that we had met before and chatted before was a good degree of comfort.

‘It was great, it was special. You sometimes worry will there be things to say, will there be things to talk about, but he puts everybody at ease. I really enjoyed the couple of minutes’ conversation we had.

‘I’m obviously well aware that the prince is an Aston Villa fan – they’ve got a very, very big game tonight, which I think he’s going to. So we spoke about that, and just generally working in broadcasting and life, really.’
